Neptune Through the Twelve Houses
With Pisces Season now in full swing, I thought it would be a good idea to focus on the planetary ruler of Pisces - Neptune! This mystical and sometimes misunderstood outer planet rules over our imagination, dreams, and spiritual connections and is known for its ethereal energy, dissolving boundaries, inspiring creativity, and teaching us the power of surrender. Neptune is the collective unconscious, hoping that we realize everything is one divine force. Neptune encourages us to re-awaken to our cosmic origins.
Neptune is also associated with that which is hidden or unseen. It represents the subtle realms of intuition, empathy, and psychic abilities. These are "unseen" senses that operate beyond the five physical senses. They involve perceiving information and energy that is not readily apparent. Neptune’s connection to spiritual and mystical experiences, is also something beyond the material world. These experiences can be profound and transformative, but they are also intangible.
Water and the ocean, are also strongly tied to Neptune. Water is a fluid and boundless element and can mold itself into any shape. It symbolizes the interconnectedness of all things and the dissolution of boundaries. The ocean specifically is vast and mysterious which serves as a powerful metaphor for the complex and often elusive nature of Neptune.
“At the highest levels of Neptunian experience, people realize that the are not human beings having a spiritual experience, but one spiritual Super-conscious having all the experiences.” -Renn Butler, The Archetypal Universe
While Neptune can be a loving and inspirational force, it can also bring confusion, illusion, and a desire to escape from reality, often through unhealthy means like substance abuse, excessive fantasizing, or isolating oneself. This avoidance/hiding can prevent us from dealing with our problems. Neptune has the power to make us feel lost and undeserving of our dreams and reveals where we need to develop discernment.
By understanding which house Neptune occupies in your natal chart, you can uncover where you’re most gifted with imagination and intuition—and where you may need to work harder to ground yourself in reality.
While the placement of Neptune in the natal chart is a longer conversation and depends on multiple factors such as the sign that it’s in and if any aspects are being made to it, I have included basic descriptions of Neptune through the houses to give you an idea of how Neptune is functioning in your own natal chart.
