Five Action Steps to Celebrate Earth Month!

This is a friendly reminder that we live on the most extraordinary, miraculous planet in the entire universe! As far as we know, it’s the only known planet that supports life, and is home to a vast array of ecosystems and species, like us! Let’s take some time to support our planet the way it has always supported us!

Earth Month is a crucial reminder of the environmental challenges we face as a global community. Climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution are just a few of the issues threatening the health and well-being of our planet and its inhabitants. The consequences of inaction are severe, and urgent action is needed to address these challenges.

You may have read that in the latest IPCC climate change report, that scientists said the world is likely to pass a dangerous temperature threshold within the next 10 years if we do not drastically reduce our global greenhouse gas emissions. 2022 saw numerous record breaking temperatures and weather caused catastrophes. We’re already past the tipping point.

Celebrating Earth Month is not just a feel-good exercise. It's a critical opportunity to raise awareness about environmental issues, educate ourselves and others, and take meaningful action to protect the planet. The stakes are high, and the time for action is now. We must acknowledge that the decisions we make today will impact generations to come. We must recognize that the health of our planet is interconnected with the health of our communities, economies, and societies.

Let's commit to making changes in our daily lives that reduce our impact on the planet. Let's demand that our leaders take bold action to address environmental issues at the local, national, and global levels. We have the knowledge, technology, and resources to make a difference, but we need collective action and political will to create a sustainable future. We must use Earth Month as a catalyst for change and commit to doing everything we can to protect our planet and ensure a livable future for all.

Five actions we can all take…

Tip # 1 Plant Trees

Planting trees is a simple yet effective way to combat climate change. Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and provide oxygen, making them a critical part of our ecosystem. You can plant trees in your yard, in your community, or donate to tree planting organizations.

One Tree Planted is an amazing organization that I love planting trees through.

Tip #2 Contact your House Representative in Congress

Call or Email your House Representative in Congress and ask them what bills they are supporting that will lower greenhouse gas emissions and reduce plastic waste in the United States.

Tip #3 Say No to Plastic

Avoid single use plastic as often as you can! Bring extra sets of reusable utensils with you wherever you go and opt for products that are packaged in paper, glass, or other compostable materials.

Tip #4 Prioritize Vegan Meals

By reducing meat and dairy consumption, you can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, water usage, and deforestation caused by the animal agriculture industry. To cut out meat and dairy, you can start by eating plant-based alternatives, such as lentils, beans, tofu, and nuts. If you’re not ready to switch to a fully vegan diet, you can start by eating vegan meals a couple times a week.

Tip #5 Volunteer for a Community Clean-Up Day

Participate in a community cleanup. This could involve picking up litter in your local park, beach, or neighborhood. Not only does it help to keep our planet clean, but it's also an excellent opportunity to connect with others and work towards a common goal.
